About Crosslands, Cumbria

Crosslands emerges from the verdant, hushed fold of the southern Lakeland fells, where the air holds the keen, damp scent of ancient woodland. It lies 6.0 miles south-west of Bowness-on-Windermere (from Bowness-on-Windermere: bearing 218°T, OS grid SD 342 894), and is situated south of Satterthwaite village. Within the protective boundaries of the Lake District National Park, the terrain shifts into a mosaic of rugged stone walls and shadowed thickets. Only a short distance to the west, the ghosts of industry linger at the Stony Hazel Finery Forge, where the cold iron once sang under the hammer. The land here slopes away toward the quiet, dark waters of Yew Beck, which carves its path through the mossy silence of the valley floor. Crosslands remains a place of low horizons and heavy skies, where the light seems to thicken against the grey, lichen-crusted slate of the local buildings. The surrounding earth carries the damp weight of peat and history, grounding the hamlet in a landscape that has long resisted the intrusion of the modern world.
