About Gawthrop, Cumbria

Gawthrop occupies a quiet fold of the land where the limestone grip of the earth softens into the verdant floor of the valley. It lies 3.7 miles south-east of Sedbergh (from Sedbergh: bearing 143°T, OS grid SD 692 873), and is situated west-north-west of Dent village. The stone walls here hold the chill of the morning long after the sun has climbed over the high shoulders of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Cold, clear water from Oliver Beck flows past the threshold of the houses, a constant, low-frequency pulse in an otherwise hushed landscape. To the east, the rush of Nettle Pot Gill adds a sharper note to the air, carrying the scent of damp moss and wet grit from the fells. Gawthrop remains a place of hard edges and soft mosses, where the architecture of the drystone wall defines the boundary between the wild moor and the human hearth. Light here has a peculiar, thin quality, tracing the grey masonry until the buildings appear to be pulling the very colour from the sky. Every heavy slab of slate and gritstone seems to anchor Gawthrop firmly against the weight of the prevailing wind.
