About High Side, Cumbria

High Side clings to the lower slopes of the Skiddaw massif, where the earth rises in sudden, muscular ridges of slate and grass. It lies 4.8 miles north-north-west of Keswick (from Keswick: bearing 336°T, OS grid NY 234 306), and is situated south-south-east of Bassenthwaite village. Deep within the Lake District National Park, the hamlet occupies a threshold between the domesticated pasture and the wild, unyielding heights of Watches. The light here has a sharp, northern clarity, catching the silver veins of Collier Sike as it cuts through the dark, damp hollows of the fell. To the east, the rounded, silent bulk of Barkbeth Hill commands the horizon, standing as a constant, brooding presence over the stone dwellings below. Winter gales often scour the lanes, leaving the air tasting of wet stone and the distant, briny breath of the Irish Sea. Life in High Side moves in synchrony with the seasonal turning of the sheep, an ancient rhythm that persists despite the quiet encroachment of the modern world.
