About Hare Edge, Derbyshire

Hare Edge occupies a high, windswept ridge where the Derbyshire light catches the stone walls with a sharp, silver clarity. It lies 4.6 miles south-west of Dronfield (from Dronfield: bearing 218°T, OS grid SK 304 726), and is situated north-north-west of Wadshelf village. The horizon here is dominated by the blunt, grassy shoulders of Puddingpie Hill, which rises to the south-east like a slumbering beast against the clouds. Ancient, weathered silence clings to the landscape, particularly near the Wayside Cross Known As Whibbersley Cross, where the lichen-dusted gritstone marks the passage of centuries. Hare Edge looks out over a fractured terrain of small, irregular fields that bear the subtle scars of medieval ploughing. To the north-east, the waters of Moorhall Reservoir hold a flat, mirror-bright stillness that contrasts with the restless movement of the wind across the exposed slopes. The earth here is stubborn and thin, demanding a persistent labour from those who work the gritstone soil. This high ground remains a place of long, lonely views, where the weather dictates the rhythm of the day and the sky feels vast and unsparing.
