About New York, Derbyshire

New York stands as a quiet cluster of residences within the South Derbyshire landscape, distinct from the grander map-namesakes of the world. It lies 5.5 miles north-north-east of Ashby-de-la-Zouch (from Ashby-de-la-Zouch: bearing 17°T, OS grid SK 383 251), and is situated west-south-west of Melbourne village. Cold air often settles over the nearby New Brook, where the water catches the low winter sun in thin, metallic ribbons. Eastward, the remnants of the Melbourne Castle fortified manor speak of a more turbulent past, now softened by the patient encroachment of grass and thorn. New York remains anchored to the rhythms of the surrounding farmland, where the soil is dark and heavy with the promise of the coming spring. Residents look toward the distant, shimmering surface of The Pool, a body of water that holds the sky in a mirror of slate and grey. The lanes leading out of New York are narrow, bordered by hedges that hold the dust of passing tractors long after the day’s work has ceased. Here, the horizon is wide and indifferent, providing a stark contrast to the small, domestic scale of the houses themselves.
