Ancient tracks cross these heights, including a section of Roman road that maintains its rigid, purposeful straightness just to the east of the farm, indifferent to the shifting seasons. The pond at the heart of Ashmore serves as a silent, reflective eye for the houses, gathering the sky into its dark, still surface. Only half a mile to the west, the ground drops away into the quiet, sheltered hollow of Shepherd's Bottom, creating a dramatic contrast to the exposed ridges above. This high-altitude isolation has preserved a distinct character, where the silence of the downland is broken only by the sharp call of lapwings or the rhythmic turning of the agricultural year.
