About Crossgill, Lancashire

Crossgill emerges from the rugged topography of the Lancashire fells as a quiet cluster of stone dwellings defined by the shifting moods of the North West. It lies 4.9 miles east of Lancaster (from Lancaster: bearing 84°T, OS grid SD 553 625), and is situated south-east of Caton village. The landscape here is carved by the persistent movement of water, most notably Artle Beck, which flows with a cold, clear urgency just south of the houses. To the north-east, the waters of Tarn Brook contribute to the hushed, watery acoustics that define the local atmosphere after a heavy rain. The terrain rises sharply towards the slopes of Potts Hill, where the light often catches the rough texture of the gritstone walls that mark the edges of ancient sheep pastures. Crossgill remains a place where the horizon is dominated by the vast, open skies of the Lune Valley rather than the works of man. These hills hold a stark, unadorned beauty that changes with the passing of every cloud, rendering the scenery more like a living sketch than a static view. Life in Crossgill moves in synchrony with the seasonal tilt of the earth, far removed from the crowded pace of the industrial coast.
