About Fenny Castle, Somerset

Fenny Castle commands a quiet, elevated presence above the damp, low-lying pastures of the Somerset Levels. It lies 2.7 miles west-south-west of Wells (from Wells: bearing 246°T, OS grid ST 508 439), and is situated west-north-west of Coxley village. Rising abruptly from the flat, water-logged earth, the motte and bailey castle for which the hamlet is named remains a silent, grassy earthwork, its defensive purpose long since surrendered to the grazing of livestock. A short distance to the north, the slopes of Callow Hill catch the afternoon sun, casting long, lean shadows across the fields that seem to hold the light in a pale, amber suspension. Nearby, the weather-worn stone of the Fenny Castle Cross stands as a solitary sentinel, marking a route that has been trodden by generations of farmers and travellers. The air here carries a distinct, sharp scent of river-silt and damp grass, rising from the network of rhynes that manage the water in the surrounding meadows. Fenny Castle remains defined by this elemental struggle between the firm, rising ground and the encroaching wetlands of the valley floor. Such places offer a rare, unadorned clarity, where the horizon feels vast and the weight of the centuries sits lightly upon the turf.
