About Fellside, Tyne and Wear

Fellside commands a high, exposed ridge where the wind carries the sharp, clean scent of open moorland across the Gateshead district. It lies 1.8 miles south-south-west of Whickham (from Whickham: bearing 210°T, OS grid NZ 194 588), and is situated north-west of Marley Hill village. Beneath the expansive North East sky, the land rises sharply to meet Bird Hill, a summit that offers a vantage point over the shifting slate-grey light of the Derwent valley. Below this vantage, the rugged terrain drops into the verdant depths of Snipes Dene, where the air grows heavy and cool under the canopy of ancient growth. Fellside retains a stark, unadorned character, shaped by the industrial echoes of coal seams that once dictated the rhythm of local labour. The horizon is marked by the distant, silent presence of the Column of Liberty, a stone finger pointing toward the clouds as if measuring the patience of the earth. Here, the ground remains scarred by the persistence of its past, yet it possesses a quiet dignity found only in places where the horizon is wide and the shadows are long. Each morning, the first rays of light catch the stone edges of the hamlet, revealing a landscape that feels less like a place of residence and more like a bridge between the wild upland and the valley floor.
