About Stella, Tyne and Wear

Stella commands a quiet stretch of the Tyne valley, where the river’s silver progress marks the boundary between industry and the encroaching wild. It lies 1.0 miles north-west of Blaydon (from Blaydon: bearing 309°T, OS grid NZ 170 644), and is situated south-south-east of Newburn village. The land here holds a grave stillness, haunted by the memory of the Battle of Newburn Ford 1640, where the waters once ran cold with the ambitions of shifting armies. Overlooking this low ground, the slopes of Image Hill provide a vantage point from which the chimneys of the past have long since vanished, leaving only the clean, sharp air of the North East. The spirit of the Tyne remains the true pulse of Stella, drawing the eye toward the horizon where the sky often bruises into shades of violet and slate. Nearby, the remnants of the Path Head Watermill speak of a time when the grind of stone and the rush of the leat defined the local rhythm. Today, Stella retains a modest composure, caught between the heavy legacy of coal and iron and the slow, persistent reclamation of the landscape by grass and sky.
