About Saddlescombe, West Sussex

Saddlescombe persists as a quiet fold of flint and chalk, guarding the secrets of the rolling Downs. It lies 4.2 miles north-north-east of Southwick (from Southwick: bearing 27°T, OS grid TQ 270 114), and is situated south-east of Poynings village. This tiny cluster of buildings occupies a hollow within the South Downs National Park, where the sky seems to press down with a peculiar, heavy clarity. To the west, the deep, scar-like cleft of Devil’s Dyke carves through the horizon, a reminder of the restless earth beneath the grass. Saddlescombe carries the memory of ancient labour, most notably in the curious structure of the well house with its heavy donkey wheel. The surrounding slopes, including the rise of East Hill, catch the slanting afternoon sun, turning the dry turf into a pale, bruised gold. Time here does not flow so much as it settles, gathering in the lee of the chalk walls like dust in a forgotten room. Every path leading away from the farmsteads feels as though it might vanish into the long, grey silence of the hills.
