It lies 3.8 miles north-north-east of Woburn Sands (from Woburn Sands: bearing 25°T, OS grid SP 952 418), and is situated south-west of Cranfield village. The landscape around West End is defined by the heavy, fertile soil that has long dictated the patterns of local agriculture and the slow growth of its hedgerows. To the east, the sprawling canopy of Rectory Wood offers a sanctuary of oak and ash, providing a stark, dark contrast to the open arable fields that define the immediate geography. The light here often feels thin and pale, catching the ridges of the furrows in the late afternoon and turning the earth into a mosaic of bruised purples and deep browns. Nearby, the ancient earthworks of the moated site at Moat Farm remind the observer of how deeply the past is pressed into the current topography.
