To the south-south-west, the slopes of Haycroft Hill catch the low, amber light of late afternoon, casting long shadows across the valley floor. Rare orchids and delicate chalk-loving flora flourish nearby at the Westfield Farm Chalk Bank SSSI, thriving in the nutrient-poor soil that keeps the vegetation sparse and refined. History lingers in the nearby Bockhampton Deserted Medieval Village, where the earth still holds the faint, grassy outlines of homes abandoned centuries ago.
