About Padworth Common

Padworth Common holds the quiet stillness of the Berkshire heath, where the horizon stretches wide under a pale, unyielding sky. It lies 2.2 miles north-east of Tadley (from Tadley: bearing 46°T, OS grid SU 619 648), and is situated north-north-east of Old Warren village. Earthworks of the ancient Grim's Bank stretch their slumbering, moss-covered spines just to the north-north-west, marking a boundary that time has long since surrendered to the grass. Below these ridges, the low-lying basin of Padworth Gully gathers the silver runoff of winter rains, feeding the damp, rich soil of the surrounding scrubland. The light here has a peculiar, thin clarity, sharpening the edges of the gorse and the low-hanging branches of the scattered oaks. Further south, the dark, still surface of Welshman's Pond catches the reflection of passing clouds, acting as a mirror to the shifting weather of the plateau. Padworth Common retains a rugged, open character that resists the neatness of the manicured garden or the paved road. Here, the wind carries no scent of industry, only the dry, sharp tang of bracken and the cold breath of the encroaching woods.
