It lies 2.3 miles north-west of Chesham (from Chesham: bearing 310°T, OS grid SP 929 038), and is situated west-south-west of Asheridge village. Ancient, hidden histories linger in the landscape, marked by the moated site and associated earthworks in Bray's Wood, where the silence of the trees preserves the memory of medieval tenure. The light here has a sharp, scouring quality, reflecting off the white flint paths that cut through the dark, heavy clay of the fields. Chartridge maintains a quiet composure, its scattered dwellings looking out toward the deeper, sunken contours of Croft Dell to the west. Roads wind with a stubborn, narrow persistence, following the natural grain of the plateau rather than the convenience of modern cartography. This elevated ground provides a vantage point over the shifting shadows of the valley, where the air remains cool even at the height of summer. The geography of Chartridge resists easy passage, demanding a measured pace from anyone walking its weathered, chalk-dusted lanes.
