About Cooks Wharf

Cooks Wharf remains a quiet witness to the slow, deliberate movement of water through the Buckinghamshire landscape. It lies 2.9 miles north of Tring (from Tring: bearing 6°T, OS grid SP 927 160), and is situated west-north-west of Pitstone village. The hamlet occupies a flat expanse where the land seems to hold its breath before the slight rise of the chalk hills. To the north-west, the slopes of Southend Hill gather the morning light, casting long, pale shadows across the fields toward the water. A short distance away, the ancient earthworks of a multivallate hillfort rest silently upon that same high ground, watching over the low-lying pastures. The atmosphere at Cooks Wharf is defined by the proximity of the Grand Union Canal, which lends the air a damp, metallic scent of reeds and heavy iron. During the height of summer, the sun strikes the surface of the canal with such intensity that the water appears as a bright, polished blade cutting through the green. Such stillness suggests a place that has long ago traded the clamour of industry for the patient, rhythmic passage of narrowboats.
