Foul Anchor emerges from the flat, reclaimed expanse of the Fenland, a place where the horizon exerts a gravitational pull on the wide, pale sky. It lies 3.9 miles south-south-east of Long Sutton (from Long Sutton: bearing 150°T, OS grid TF 464 176), and is situated east-south-east of Tydd Gote village. The landscape here is defined by the rigorous geometry of drainage, where the North Level Main Drain marks a straight, silent border just half a mile to the north-east. Water defines the character of Foul Anchor, as the land exists in a perpetual negotiation with the silt and the tides of the Wash. To the east, the low-lying terrain of East Marsh stretches out, an open stage for the shifting light that bleaches the colour from the tall, swaying reeds. The air carries the sharp, saline memory of the sea, which once pushed much further inland before the industrious hand of man tamed the silt. In the quiet hours, the stillness of the fields reminds one that the ground beneath is as much a construction of human will as it is a geological fact. Foul Anchor remains a sentinel of the drained plains, a place where the earth is thin and the sky is overwhelmingly vast.
