Great Raveley emerges from the flat, expansive horizon of the Cambridgeshire clay as a collection of quiet lanes and historic farmsteads. It lies 3.2 miles south-west of Ramsey (from Ramsey: bearing 224°T, OS grid TL 252 812), and is situated south-south-west of Upwood village. Beyond the clusters of houses, the land stretches out toward the ancient, moss-covered earthworks of the Manor of Moyne, where the shadows of long-vanished moats deepen as the sun wanes. To the north, the protected grasses of Upwood Meadows SSSI sway in the wind, a remnant of a wilder landscape that once dominated this low-lying expanse. The persistent, quiet hum of the countryside is occasionally broken by the distant movement of water through the nearby drainage channels, a reminder of the constant struggle to keep the fields from returning to the bog.
