About Calrofold

Calrofold emerges from the rugged Cheshire landscape as a cluster of stone dwellings defined by the high, cold breath of the surrounding hills. It lies 1.7 miles east-north-east of Macclesfield (from Macclesfield: bearing 68°T, OS grid SJ 942 747), and is situated south-south-west of Brookhouse village. To the southwest, the blunt rise of Cliff Hill casts a long, sharpening shadow across the pastures as the afternoon light begins to fail. The land here leans toward the steep, verdant descent of Brookhouse Clough, where the water carves a restless path through the limestone bedrock. Calrofold maintains a stoic character, shaped by centuries of agricultural labour and the proximity of the gritstone edges that define this part of the North West. Winter winds often scour the gable ends of the older structures, leaving the masonry weathered and grey as the nearby crags. Every fence line and drystone wall serves as a boundary against the wilder, unyielding character of the high ground above. The quietude of the place is not an absence of sound, but a heavy, watchful silence that persists even when the wind dies down.
