About Tremar

Granite-strewn hills rise to meet the brooding horizon above Tremar, where the air holds the sharp, metallic tang of an abandoned mining past. It lies 2.2 miles north of Liskeard (from Liskeard: bearing 9°T, OS grid SX 258 681), and is situated north-west of Rosecraddoc village. Low stone walls trace the contours of the land, dividing fields that seem to hold the pale, muted light of the Cornish uplands in their shallow hollows. To the north-east, the ancient, hunched stones of Trethevy Quoit stand as a silent witness to a pre-Christian world, casting long, deliberate shadows across the moor. Below the rugged slopes, the remnants of Jope’s Shaft serve as a stark reminder of the men who once hollowed out the earth for copper and tin. Tremar breathes in the damp, shifting mists that roll down from the heights of Caradon Hill, coating the gorse and heather in a fine, silver dew. This landscape refuses to be tamed, remaining instead a place where the geology of the ground dictates the slow pace of the day. Every path leading away from the houses seems to dissolve into the wild, unyielding scrub of the surrounding countryside.
