About West Antony

West Antony rises above the salt-brined fields of the Rame Peninsula, where the air holds the keen, sharp edge of the approaching Channel. It lies 2.4 miles west-south-west of Torpoint (from Torpoint: bearing 258°T, OS grid SX 400 545), and is situated north-east of Antony village. The land here slopes away in long, disciplined furrows toward the sea, catching the low, pale light that bleaches the hedgerows in winter. To the north-west, the heavy ramparts of Scraesdon Fort emerge from the gorse, a silent, earthen weight guarding the quietude of the surrounding pasture. West Antony maintains a stoic distance from the main roads, favouring the solitude of the coastal plateau over the bustle of the nearby harbour. A short distance away, the dark, sheltered waters of Warren Point offer a refuge for migratory birds that wheel and cry against the grey, expansive sky. The soil of West Antony is thin and stubborn, demanding much of those who work the earth beneath the wide, unblinking eye of the Atlantic sun.
