Hamsterley commands the rising ground where the foothills of the Pennines begin to assert their ancient, rugged character against the softer plains of County Durham. It lies 4.1 miles south-west of Crook (from Crook: bearing 228°T, OS grid NZ 115 310), and is situated west of Witton-le-Wear village. To the west, the land climbs toward the firm prominence of West Knotty Hill, where the wind carries a persistent, bracing chill across the heather.
