It lies 2.7 miles south-south-west of Chester-le-Street (from Chester-le-Street: bearing 204°T, OS grid NZ 256 477), and is situated north-west of Tan Hills village. Beyond the domestic rows, the land rises sharply towards the ridge of West Hill, where the light catches the gorse in a pale, lemon-yellow wash against the grey northern sky. To the west, the modest depression of Howlmire Gill drains the surrounding slopes, carrying rain down through thickets of hawthorn and bramble. Nettlesworth retains a sense of seclusion, far removed from the arterial roads that hum with modern impatience. The residents walk paths where the coal-dust of previous centuries has long since been subsumed by the persistent, encroaching green of the moorland fringe.
