Banks occupies a high, windswept ridge where the Cumbrian landscape fractures into rolling, heather-dusted horizons. It lies 3.1 miles north-east of Brampton (from Brampton: bearing 44°T, OS grid NY 565 646), and is situated north-west of Low Row village. Stone walls divide the pastures into a rigid geometry, their lichen-crusted surfaces holding the pale, thin light of the North. To the west, the weathered remnants of Hare Hill stand as a silent witness to the Roman occupation that once carved a path across this terrain. Banks remains tethered to this ancient frontier, where the earth still bears the faint, sunken scars of Hadrian’s Wall beneath the grass. The air here carries a sharp, metallic clarity, untempered by the shelter of the lower vales. Beyond the immediate fields, the rising silhouette of Craggle Hill anchors the view, asserting a rugged permanence against the vast, shifting clouds. Farmers continue to work the heavy soil, their labour following the slow, inevitable turn of seasons that have defined Banks for generations.
