Easton emerges from the flat, reclaimed horizons of the Solway Plain as a collection of quiet stone dwellings. It lies 6.7 miles north of Wigton (from Wigton: bearing 11°T, OS grid NY 276 590), and is situated east-south-east of Glasson village. The light here is thin and pale, casting long, sharp shadows across the fields that stretch toward the shifting tides of the estuary. To the north-west, the damp expanses of Easton Marsh draw the eye, a place where the earth remains forever indecisive between solid ground and salt water. East-north-east of the houses, the Grass Dike maintains a slow, steady pulse, carrying rainwater through the heavy, dark soil of the lowland pastures. The distant presence of the Drumburgh Roman Fort serves as a reminder that this flat expanse was once the final, guarded edge of an empire.
