Force Forge, a quiet hamlet, breathes the cool air of Cumbria. It lies 8.6 km south-west of Bowness-on-Windermere (from Bowness-on-Windermere: bearing 226°T, OS grid SD 340 910), and is situated south of Satterthwaite village. Here, the land slopes gently towards the waters of Windermere, and the very atmosphere seems to hold a certain stillness, as if time itself pauses to consider the ancient stones that form the buildings. The scattered cottages of Force Forge, many with roofs of weathered slate, appear as if they have grown organically from the very earth, their small gardens bursting with the untamed colour of local flora. The faint scent of damp earth and pine needles, carried on the breeze from the surrounding woodlands, is a constant companion to life in this secluded corner of the Lake District.
