Newbiggin rests upon the low, salt-bitten pastures of the Cumbrian coast, where the sky claims more territory than the land itself. It lies 8.3 miles west-north-west of Broughton in Furness (from Broughton in Furness: bearing 298°T, OS grid SD 095 940), and is situated north-west of Waberthwaite village. The light here arrives thin and sharp, glancing off the reeds of Newbiggin Marsh to turn the grey water into polished flint. A quiet gravity defines the landscape, anchored by the slow, persistent movement of the tides that pull at the nearby shoreline. Nearby, the cool, clear currents of Whitrow Beck carve a shallow path through the earth, marking the boundary between the firm ground and the shifting, tidal saltings.
