Common Side reveals itself through a series of quiet, steep-laned shifts that define the rugged character of the North East Derbyshire landscape. It lies 2.1 miles south-south-west of Dronfield (from Dronfield: bearing 202°T, OS grid SK 337 753), and is situated north-west of Barlow village. Low-hanging clouds often brush against the stone walls here, catching the moisture that rises from the nearby Barlow Brook as it carves a path through the valley floor. Common Side sits upon a high, exposed ridge where the wind carries the scent of damp earth and distant woodsmoke from the hearths of older cottages. To the east, the dense canopy of Monk Wood holds a stillness that contrasts with the brisk, open air of the surrounding slopes. The terrain drops away sharply toward the west, where the water of Crowhole Brook flows with a persistent, rhythmic clarity over moss-slicked rocks. This is a place of hard stone and sharp horizons, where the architecture seems to have grown directly from the bedrock of the hillside. Each season brings a different quality of light to these fields, turning the pastures into a patchwork of muted greys and deep, resonant greens.
