About Elton

Elton holds its own against the sweeping, open horizons of the Derbyshire Dales. It lies 3.5 miles west-south-west of Darley Dale (from Darley Dale: bearing 250°T, OS grid SK 223 609), and is situated south-west of Birchover village. Stone walls of gritstone grey divide the pastures, tracing lines across a landscape that sits firmly within the Peak District National Park. To the north-north-west, the rise of Anthony Hill catches the morning light, casting long, lean shadows over the limestone plateau. The ground here remembers the toil of earlier generations, especially toward the south where the earth bears the hollow scars of the Rainslow Scrins lead mines. Elton retains a quiet, austere character, with its houses gathered as if to share the warmth of the sun against the biting winds of the high ground. Footpaths wander out from the centre, leading toward the weathered gritstone ridges that define the horizon. Life in Elton proceeds with a measured stillness, governed more by the shifting clouds above the moorland than by the frantic pace of the modern world.
