Rowsley gathers where the Derwent and the Wye trade their currents in a slow, persistent marriage of waters. It lies 2.3 miles north-north-west of Darley Dale (from Darley Dale: bearing 333°T, OS grid SK 259 660), and is situated south-south-west of Beeley village. The ancient stone arches of Rowsley Bridge span the water with a quiet, stubborn endurance, bearing the weight of centuries as if they were nothing more than a morning mist. Beyond the riverbanks, the land rises toward the brooding, heather-dusted expanse of Lees Moor, where the wind carries the sharp, clean scent of high-altitude gritstone. Rowsley holds its history in the heavy, weathered masonry of the old mill buildings, where the ghosts of industry still linger in the cold, damp shadows of the rafters.
