Steeple Grange emerges from the limestone uplands of Derbyshire as a quiet witness to the region’s long industrial extraction. It lies 0.8 miles north of Wirksworth (from Wirksworth: bearing 10°T, OS grid SK 288 553), and is situated north-west of Bolehill village. The horizon here is defined by the sharp, grey geometry of the landscape, where the earth has been turned inside out by centuries of lead mining and quarrying. A lingering industrial gravity informs the atmosphere, particularly near the Steeple Grange Light Railway, where the rusted iron tracks offer a silent contrast to the encroaching wild grasses. Beyond these tracks, the Colehill Quarries SSSI reveals the skeletal white guts of the hills, bleached by a pale, northern light that makes every shadow appear unusually deep. This terrain does not invite soft sentiment, but rather commands a respect for the sheer, unyielding weight of the stone that buttresses the ground. Walking the perimeter, one senses the remnants of a more frantic age, now softened by the slow reclamation of scrub and wind-blown seeds.
