Upper Loads marks a quiet convergence of gritstone and pasture on the edge of the Peak District. It lies 4.2 miles west-south-west of Chesterfield (from Chesterfield: bearing 257°T, OS grid SK 315 695), and is situated south of Wadshelf village. Cold winds often scour these slopes, carrying the scent of damp earth and the ancient stillness of high ground. To the south, the earth holds the ghost of human industry, where the Red Lead Mill, Lead Smelt Mill, and Corn Mill once harnessed the water to grind and smelt the heavy ores of the earth. These remnants lie in quiet decay, their stones slowly returning to the moorland that long ago dictated the pace of life here. Further south, the Cairnfield 390M South Of Syda Farm stands as a silent monitor of the prehistoric pulse that beats beneath the modern grazing lines. Light here has a sharp, pale quality, catching the edges of drystone walls that divide the fields into irregular, weathered puzzles. Upper Loads remains a place where the horizon feels vast, indifferent, and beautifully heavy with the weight of its own long, stony memory.
