Upper Town emerges from the limestone plateau of the Derbyshire Dales as a collection of quiet stone dwellings that hold the light of the low sun with a particular, pale intensity. It lies 3.5 miles west-south-west of Wirksworth (from Wirksworth: bearing 246°T, OS grid SK 235 517), and is situated north of Hognaston village. The land here slopes away in long, disciplined ridges, shaped by ancient agricultural cycles that leave the fields exposed to the biting winds of the Pennines. A short walk toward the reservoir reveals the Carsington Water Visitor Centre, where the vast, artificial horizon offers a stark contrast to the small-scale, irregular boundaries of the local dry-stone walls. Beyond these man-made edges, the Wall Lands Sssi preserves a fragile, chalky wildness that has survived the encroachment of modern industry. Upper Town remains defined by the austere, grey palette of its architecture, which seems to absorb the damp, shifting mists rolling in from the nearby hills. The atmosphere carries a heavy, deliberate silence, broken only by the sharp call of lapwings navigating the open sky above the pasture. Here, the passage of time is measured not by clocks, but by the gradual weathering of gritstone masonry and the seasonal turning of the surrounding sheep-grazed slopes.
