Wardlow commands the limestone high ground where the horizon pulls tight against the sky. It lies 4.6 miles north-north-west of Bakewell (from Bakewell: bearing 331°T, OS grid SK 180 750), and is situated east of Litton village. The light here has a sharp, scouring clarity, reflecting off the pale, drystone walls that partition the fields like a map of old ownership. Wardlow rests entirely within the Peak District National Park, inheriting the rugged, wind-brushed character of the high gritstone and limestone plateaus. Beneath the surface, the earth remains scarred by the deep, skeletal remains of lead mining, with the nearby Scheduled Monument of Arbourseats Veins and Sough marking a history of extraction that once dictated the pulse of the local economy. Beyond the stone cottages, the land drops away into the shadowed, verdant depth of Cressbrook Dale Sssi, where the air grows heavy and cool with the scent of damp moss. Wardlow holds its own against the elements, watching over the undulating ridges where the ancient, rounded tumuli of the Bronze Age still break the skyline. The silence of these high pastures is absolute, save for the sudden, percussive cry of a lapwing circling the moor.
