Appledore holds its ground where the Torridge and Taw rivers bleed their silt into the grey Atlantic. It lies 1.3 miles north-east of Northam (from Northam: bearing 48°T, OS grid SS 464 304), and is situated west-north-west of Instow village. Salt-crusted cottages climb the steep incline from the quay, their pastel lime-washes muted by the persistent, abrasive damp of the estuary air. On the northern edge, the Time and Tide Bell rings a hollow, rhythmic iron note whenever the water rises to reclaim the mudflats. The North Devon Maritime Museum stands as a keeper of local memory, housing the remnants of a shipwright’s craft that once defined the very pulse of the shoreline. Beyond the slipways, the wetlands of West Appledore stretch out in a tangled mosaic of reeds and tidal debris, shifting with every turn of the moon. Appledore remains a place of hard edges and cold currents, where the horizon is always crowded with the ghosts of wooden masts and the heavy, industrial silence of the dry dock.
