Bere Ferrers occupies a slender peninsula of land, caught in the quiet embrace of the River Tavy and the wider Tamar. It lies 3.2 miles north-north-east of Saltash (from Saltash: bearing 26°T, OS grid SX 453 634), and is situated east-north-east of Cargreen village. The terrain here descends toward the water in a series of wooded slopes, where the salt-heavy air clarifies the light and sharpens the edges of the ancient hedgerows. Much of the land around Bere Ferrers falls within the Tamar-Tavy Estuary SSSI, a designation that protects the mudflats where migratory birds arrive to feed as the tide recedes. Beyond the immediate banks, the landscape rises toward the sheltered rise of Peter Hopper's Hill, offering a vantage point over the shifting blues of the waterway. The parish church of Saint Andrew anchors the heart of Bere Ferrers, its stone tower reflecting the grey, unyielding character of the local slate. Below, the tidal rhythm of the Tamar dictates the mood of the shoreline, pulling the grey silt away to reveal the skeletal remains of old quays. These waters once carried the wealth of silver and lead mines, though today the only industry is the slow turning of the seasons across the fields.
