About Chivelstone

Chivelstone remains a quiet gathering of stone and slate holding firm against the salt-laden winds of the Devon coast. It lies 2.6 miles east of Salcombe (from Salcombe: bearing 92°T, OS grid SX 782 387), and is situated south-east of South Pool village. The landscape here falls away toward the sea in a series of rugged, wind-scoured folds that define the Prawle Point and Start Point SSSI. Beneath the expansive, indifferent sky, the earth feels ancient and unyielding, marked by the sparse grit of coastal soil. Chivelstone watches over these slopes where the light turns a bruised, metallic grey before the evening tide rolls in. To the southeast, the sheltered curve of Woodcombe Sand offers a brief respite from the relentless Atlantic spray that keeps the local flora stunted and hardy. The architecture of the parish church reflects this austerity, built from local stone that seems to have grown directly out of the bedrock itself. Time in Chivelstone does not pass with the frantic ticking of a clock, but rather with the slow, rhythmic rotation of the seasons across the exposed cliffs.
