Cornworthy breathes through the damp, green hollows of the South Hams, where the air holds a permanent, cool weight of river mist. It lies 3.3 miles south-south-east of Totnes (from Totnes: bearing 152°T, OS grid SX 826 556), and is situated east-south-east of Tuckenhay village. The ruins of Cornworthy Priory remain as a hushed, weathered skeleton against the landscape, marking the site where Augustinian canonesses once moved in the long shadows of the medieval era. Beyond these stone fragments, Corkscrew Hill rises in a sharp, sudden defiance of the surrounding lowlands, catching the pale, slanted light of a Devon afternoon. Fields of heavy, iron-rich earth slope toward the hidden veins of water that feed the nearby estuaries.
