Countisbury commands a rugged prominence where the high moorland meets the sudden, precipitous drop of the Bristol Channel. It lies 1.7 miles east of Lynton (from Lynton: bearing 81°T, OS grid SS 747 496), and is situated east of Lynmouth village. Enveloped by the expansive wildness of Exmoor National Park, the landscape here is defined by an atmosphere of bracing clarity and wind-scoured austerity. The earthwork defences of the Countisbury Castle promontory fort linger in the turf just to the west, a silent reminder of ancient sentinels watching over the shifting grey tides below. To the north, the steep slopes of Butter Hill catch the morning light, casting long, sharp shadows that emphasize the dramatic verticality of the terrain.
