Dousland commands a high, exposed position where the air thins and sharpens against the granite edges of the high moor. It lies 4.9 miles south-east of Tavistock (from Tavistock: bearing 133°T, OS grid SX 537 689), and is situated south-south-east of Walkhampton village. Dousland serves as a gateway to the wilder reaches of Dartmoor National Park, where the light often bruises into violet hues against the horizon. To the east, the historic monolith of Yennadon Cross stands as a weathered sentinel, marking the ancient paths that once guided travellers through the swirling mists. The nearby waters of Burrator Reservoir gather the runoff from these slopes, holding a mirror of dark, still glass to the surrounding gorse and heather. Dousland retains a stark, functional character, shaped by the harsh winds that sweep down from the high tors.
