Edistone holds the quiet gravity of the Hartland Peninsula, where the wind shears across the exposed Devon fields. It lies 9.6 miles north of Stratton (from Stratton: bearing 5°T, OS grid SS 249 218), and is situated south-south-west of Hartland village. The land here leans into the Atlantic, a rugged shelf of earth that falls within the protected boundaries of the Marsland To Clovelly Coast SSSI. Edistone remains a place of sparse, hard-won light, where the salt-heavy air scours the stone of low walls and hedges. To the north, the rugged rise of Andrew’s Hill casts a long, blunt shadow over the surrounding lanes as the seasons turn. The horizon is wide and indifferent, dominated by a sky that changes with the sudden, sharp violence of the coast. Below the soil, the deep geology of the region persists, indifferent to the small clusters of homes that endure the persistent westerly gales. Every structure in Edistone seems to hunker down, absorbing the damp chill that rolls inland from the cliffs.
