Gidleigh rests in a pocket of West Devon where the land begins to rise towards Dartmoor's wilder heart. It lies 3.1 km west-north-west of Chagford (from Chagford: bearing 285°T, OS grid SX 671 883), and is situated south of Throwleigh village. Here, the granite outcrops of the moor seem to whisper secrets on the wind, a constant reminder of the ancient geology beneath. The air often carries the damp scent of moss and bracken, a fragrance particular to this edge of the national park, and the light can be startlingly clear, illuminating the rough stone walls and the scatter of cottages that compose Gidleigh. The river Teign, a lively ribbon of water, flows not far from the hamlet, its murmur a perpetual counterpoint to the quietude of the surrounding countryside.
