It lies 4.5 miles south-west of Wellington (from Wellington: bearing 227°T, OS grid ST 085 157), and is situated south-east of Great Fossend village. Only a short distance away, the Maiden Down Sssi stretches its forty hectares of rough, unkempt heath, a patch of wilderness that defies the neat boundaries of the surrounding farmland. The wind carries a cold, sharp edge over these slopes, scouring the landscape of anything that does not belong to the stubborn grit of the soil. Gipsy Town remains a place of hollows and sudden inclines, where the silence is broken only by the rhythmic shift of weather moving in from the Atlantic. Down toward the west, the Fenacre Water traces its path through the heavy clay, carving a slow, dark vein across the valley floor.
