Heathfield occupies a ridge of high, wind-brushed ground where the air carries the sharp, clean scent of the nearby moorland. It lies 3.1 miles north-north-west of Tavistock (from Tavistock: bearing 344°T, OS grid SX 469 792), and is situated south-south-west of North Brentor village. The landscape here is defined by an ancient, rugged permanence, marked to the west by the rounded rise of The Beacon. Beneath the soil of these quiet fields, the Round Barrow Cemetery and Beacon At Heathfield hold the silent, heavy weight of prehistoric burials, anchoring the horizon in deep time. To the north, the sharp volcanic crag of the Brent Tor Sssi pierces the sky like a splinter of dark stone, drawing the eye away from the sheltered valleys below. Heathfield remains a place of exposed edges and wide, shifting light, where the sun seems to linger longer against the granite outcrops.
