Instow commands the confluence where the Torridge river meets the Taw, watching the restless waters churn toward the Atlantic. It lies 1.6 miles east-north-east of Northam (from Northam: bearing 63°T, OS grid SS 472 302), and is situated east-south-east of Appledore village. Broad expanses of Instow Sands stretch out at low tide, their ribbed, silty furrows catching the pale, bruised light of the estuary in a way that suggests a landscape caught in perpetual transition. Across the water, the maritime history of the coast remains etched into the working quays, while the Time and Tide Bell rings out its rhythmic, mournful toll whenever the sea claims the shore. The grand, sprawling grounds of Tapeley Park rise behind the shoreline, a testament to a landscape designed for leisure and the orderly cultivation of nature. Sailors and visitors alike often congregate at the water’s edge, where the salt-heavy air carries the sharp tang of mudflats and brine. Through the changing seasons, the horizon here remains wide and unsparing, defined more by the shifting moods of the tide than by the static stone of the buildings.
