Lopwell reveals itself where the tidal waters of the River Tavy lose their salt to the brackish push of the inland flow. It lies 4.6 miles north-east of Saltash (from Saltash: bearing 35°T, OS grid SX 474 647), and is situated south-west of Milton Combe village. The water here holds a slate-grey sheen, reflecting the shifting moods of the sky as it moves past the mudflats. To the south, the landscape softens toward the quiet expanse of Blaxton Marsh, where the reeds lean in unison under the weight of a passing breeze. Lopwell retains a singular stillness, defined by the narrow bridge that crosses the river and the dark, tangled thickets that climb the surrounding banks. Beyond the immediate reach of the tide, the ancient stone of Buckland Abbey stands in the distance, a silent anchor to the monastic history of the valley. Sunlight often catches the slick, dark surfaces of the exposed riverbed at low tide, revealing a rugged geometry of silt and stone. This quiet corner of the South Hams remains a place where the pulse of the river dictates the rhythm of the day.
