Millhayes emerges from the damp, heavy earth of the Blackdown Hills as a quiet gathering of stone and slate. It lies 4.1 miles south of Wellington (from Wellington: bearing 179°T, OS grid ST 139 140), and is situated north-north-east of Hemyock village. The light here often feels thick and silver, catching on the moisture that clings to the limestone walls of local cottages. To the south-south-west, the weathered ruins of Hemyock Castle provide a skeletal anchor to the landscape, reminding observers of a more turbulent past. Northward, the slopes of Combe Hill rise sharply, their flanks covered in gorse and bracken that turn a deep, bruised purple under the autumn sky. Millhayes occupies a position where the high, windswept commons meet the lower, more sheltered pastures of the valley floor. Farmers here work fields that have been turned by the plough for centuries, their labour dictated by the slow, seasonal pulse of the surrounding terrain. Small, narrow lanes wind between thick hedgerows, funneling the morning mist through the centre of the lanes until the sun burns it away.
