About Pizwell

Pizwell emerges from the high, unforgiving expanse of Dartmoor National Park as a collection of granite-hewn dwellings that seem to draw their strength directly from the bedrock. It lies 6.0 miles south-south-west of Chagford (from Chagford: bearing 198°T, OS grid SX 668 784), and is situated west-south-west of Manaton village. The light here possesses a peculiar clarity, stripping the heather of its softness and revealing the austere, skeletal geometry of the surrounding moorland. Only half a mile to the east-north-east, the ancient ring cairn on Soussons Down stands as a silent witness to eras long before the present agricultural rhythms took hold. Pizwell remains perpetually shaped by the wind, which carries the faint, metallic scent of the distant Vitifer Mine Leat across the exposed terrain. To the south-east, the remnants of a historic pound mark the boundary between the wild, untamed commons and the efforts of human order. These stones, weathered by centuries of rain, hold the heat of the sun in a way that makes the landscape feel both ancient and immediate. Pizwell survives not as a relic, but as an active participant in the rugged, slow-moving life of the high plateau.
