Stowford emerges from the quiet, rolling topography of North Devon as a cluster of stone and slate anchored to the land. It lies 5.5 miles west of South Molton (from South Molton: bearing 273°T, OS grid SS 625 265), and is situated north-west of Chittlehampton village. Lanes narrow to single tracks here, hemmed in by high, tangled banks that hold the damp scent of moss and ancient earth throughout the year. The low, pale light of the West Country often catches the grey masonry of local walls, casting long shadows that sharpen the contours of the fields. To the south-west, the currents of Hawkridge Brook pull steadily through the dark vegetation, providing a rhythmic, metallic pulse to the silence of the surrounding meadows. Nearby, the remnants of the Cider House stand as a skeletal reminder of a more industrious, agricultural past, where the harvest once dictated the slow turning of the months. Stowford retains a modest, solitary character, seemingly indifferent to the hurried pace of the modern world beyond its borders. The horizon remains wide and unencumbered, allowing the weather to arrive in bruised, dramatic sweeps from the Atlantic coast.
