About Vale Down

Vale Down emerges from the high, shivering grasses of the West Devon landscape like a stone breath held against the vastness of the moor. It lies 6.9 miles south-south-west of Okehampton (from Okehampton: bearing 213°T, OS grid SX 523 859), and is situated north-east of Lydford village. Within the rugged expanse of Dartmoor National Park, the hamlet occupies a threshold where the wind carries the sharp, clean scent of granite and damp gorse. To the east, the silhouette of Brat Tor rises against the horizon, its crown often bruised by the bruised purple of an approaching storm. Ancient earthworks, such as the ring cairn near the summit of Great Nodden, suggest that Vale Down has long watched the slow, geological turning of the seasons. The light here possesses a particular, silver clarity, illuminating the moss-slicked walls and the sudden, startling flight of a kestrel over the open heather. Life in Vale Down remains tethered to the moods of the high ground, where the silence is only broken by the distant, rhythmic water-music of the Walla Brook. Every evening, the shadows lengthen across the tussocks, tracing the lines of a landscape that belongs more to the sky than to the maps of men.
